Lately, I have been noticing images of birds and birdcages in home furnishings, paintings and all things artistic.

Birdcages are suddenly in-style and rightly they should be ~ they are beautiful and mystical looking in paintings with the door ajar and the feel of a bird running free.

In short, they are ornately magical in their symbolism.

As a Mom addicted to searching through Etsy (love it so much!), I did a search for “birdcages” and found this lovely seller on ebay: Sascalia

This art print from an original painting named “Letting Go” is amazing. Stunning mix of colors with an edge of surreal in the work, which can also be purchased as print on wood, as well. The open birdcage the girl is holding onto with her other arm raised is telling of the “letting go” aspect that oozes from this pretty piece.

My daughter Mia’s pick is magnificent Twilight. For 8 years-0ld, I think my daughter has very good taste:

I think this one is electric and note the bird. They are one of my most treasured animals. It is called Lila and the Bird.

And, wouldn’t this uplifting fairy picture called “Fly” look something as sweet as a cupcake in a girl’s room? I love the shades of rosy pink highlighted in the hills, the fairy details and the lofty ballons.

Visit Sascalia at Etsy to find something just for you!

But, back to the birdcages. Here are few of my other favorite picks with a birdcage theme found at Etsy.

Happy Retro Birds Pillow cover by Etsy aeller CottonColors:

And another one by polishedtwo:

Can you tell us what makes you a Mompreneur?

After deciding to primarily stay at home with my young children, I wanted to find a way to use my previous experience, and my true passion to supplement our family’s income. I specialize in children’s portraiture.

Did you need money to launch and how do you market your paintings?

I was aware that with our family’s budget, and my having been at home, there was not going to be any capital to get started…. “Necessity is the mother of invention.” I found a way to work with what I had relying on the resources many mother’s have – school events, playgroups, and women’s groups to get my work out there. My portraits also hang in people’s homes, which provide some of the best advertising. I also pay for space at juried art fairs, and show my work in galleries.

How did you get the word out about your business?

My business grew by word of mouth and local advertising. It developed over time with determination. I am making money; don’t underestimate the social aspect of marketing.

How do you want your business to grow?

As my exposure increases, I hope to be able to command a higher price per commission and continue to have new clients come to me. I’m doing something that I have always had a drive to do. The challenge is to maintain balance with my family obligations.

What is your greatest challenge in this business?

My greatest challenge was just getting back out there and being creative about my networking opportunities. Moms of young children don’t have the opportunity to run in the same social circles as others in the arts on a regular basis.

What has been your biggest personal sacrifice?

SLEEP!

What advice would you give to other Moms who want to launch a business?

I would say if you’re going to start a business from home, and especially if you have children, choose something you love. You don’t, you’re going to burn out, and remember, and your kids want to see you happy. What a great example it is for your children to see you doing what you love!
